A spectator has been killed after a horrifying accident saw a Nissan race car flip and fly over safety barrier at the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

Driver Jann Mardenborough survived the terrifying moment when his VLN car flipped over, then cleared the chain link fence and landed in the spectators’ area.

The driver walked away from the accident, and has gone to hospital for routine checks, but tragically one fan was killed.

Mardenborough was driving the car in the Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nurburgring (VLN) endurance race.

A VLN statement said: “The opening round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nurburgring was marred by an accident on Saturday which injured several spectators.

“One of the spectators died, despite the immediate actions of the rescue crew in the medical centre at the circuit.

The other injured spectators have been taken to hospital for ongoing medical care.

“The race was stopped to give emergency crew quick access to the circuit, and wasn’t restarted.

“The accident occurred in the Flugplatz part of the circuit, with a competitor leaving the circuit for a yet unspecified reason and finishing up behind the safety fencing.

“The VLN and the organisers are deeply saddened by the accident, and their thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims.”

A Nissan statement added: “Today’s events have been a tragedy. We are all deeply shocked and saddened by these events and our immediate thoughts go to the deceased, those injured and their families and friends.

Former Swansea Metropolitan University motorsport engineering student Mardenborough shot to stardom after honing his technique on the PlayStation.

In 2011, he beat 90,000 other entrants to win a competition offering him the chance to become a professional racing driver.

The contest involved the Gran Turismo driving game and his victory allowed him the opportunity to compete in the Dubai 24 Hour race, where he finished third in his class.

Last autumn, he was selected to be a GP3 driver with Arden International, a team owned by F1’s Red Bull Racing supremo Christian Horner.

Mardenborough’s father Steve is a former professional footballer and played for Cardiff City, Swansea City and Newport County.
