On this episode of HOT ROD Garage, presented by Lincoln Tech we’re kicking off 2015 with a new project car, the EBC Brakes 2005 Mustang GT. Our plan for this car is simple: build an S197 Mustang with easy bolt-on parts to answer all the basic questions we read on every Mustang forum on the Internet. Our goal is to have an affordable daily driver that can also handle a weekend autocross or open-track day. Here in the first installment, we’re lowering the car as affordably as possible with Ford Racing K springs, telling you the exact wheel and tire specs for a perfect fit, and making it stop more reliably with EBC Brakes stock-replacement rotors and Yellowstuff pads. Best of all, we test the performance once we’re done. Come back to HOT ROD Garage in coming episodes to see more on the EBC Brakes Mustang.

HOT ROD Garage appears every fourth Thursday on the Motor Trend channel. http://www.youtube.com/motortrend

Hydroponic Homie says:

When you say $10k and cheap it hurts my broke ass feelings lol.

potaka79 says:

We need a MCM & RoadKill episode, please someone make this
happen…..Please for the love of all things mechanical.

Andrew Mason says:

Well im gonna be late for school… thats ok, these videos are worth it!

Dineth J says:

Dont forget it is good to get an alignment after you alter the height of
the car.

Murray P Cakes says:

David Freiburger, nice to see you answering questions. Very nice touch. And
greatly appreciated.

fellowship of the goat says:

I once undid the top nut that holds a strut together, without compressing
the springs (complete brain fart).
I tell you what, I have probably never jumped so high in my life

classiccarz says:

I feel like I’m watching an infomercial..

Francis S says:

A year ago I tried changing my springs and thank god I survived. I forgot
to put those safety stuff on my last spring and that shit almost hit me in
the face. Overall I’m selling my Toyota and I’ll be a proud 2015 ecoboost
mustang owner 🙂

Motor Trend Channel says:

Own a Mustang? It’s our new HOT ROD Garage Project Car!

focused313 says:

I can’t deny that the 05-09 mustang is a great deal. For the speed that you
can get for less than 15k even with low mileage, I’d be happy. They can
easily be made even quicker for under a grand too. I don’t think GM had
anything out with a v8 and rwd during this time that is this price.
Unfortunately, nothing in my soul would allow me to buy a Ford.

Greg Hauser says:

Sooooo…. when does the LS motor go in? lol

dave dunn says:

Dont buy falken tires! They are awful! I speak from experience. They wear
unevenly and fast!

Jeffrey Hung says:

should always consider an adjustable panhard bar when you lower it

Grantii says:

When did Kevin Bacon start working at Lincoln Tech?

DirtyDanGaiming says:

I actually really liked this episode, it seemed more laid back and I
understood everything he talked about. Previous episodes seemed to me to
professional and scripted.

Big_Adam_2050 says:

Isn’t it bad to hand the whole brake assembly from the brake line like that?

Edit ; I mean at 11:10

Curtis Yamanaka says:

Question, would it have been better to put in an adjustable panhard bar to
recenter the rear axle after lowering?
Or do the Ford Racing Springs not need it?

Vern Gowsell says:

hey fryburger 05 mustang cheap to build , no shit ! they cheap rite off
factory floor any rustang is just more ford crap clutterin up breakdown
lanes please do suthin entertaining with it like strip down same as the
vette u all did then do a show off stripdown pony against vette . U know
head to tail i mean head to head all terrain. that way it wiill b fair sand
dunes ,track race , mud run , street an strip and of course natural
envirement for pony some one holdin the reins( on the back of a tow truck )
this is sumthin buddys an i hope to see thanx

Joshua C says:

My buddy took a spring in the gut when we did mine. Made a huge bruise.

idriwzrd says:

I suppose the average Mustang owner needs a tutorial on changing brake pads
and rotors.
The cheapest/easiest way to lower a car is to cut the springs, which has
the added benefit of increasing the spring rate.
Looking forward to the love van and Chevelle projects.

Lee S says:

Additional tip on the car lift. Make sure after lifting it, you rest it on
the safety locks!

bdd1469 says:

Way to do a half ass brake job… Come on guys, this is supossed to be a
tech school????? Didn’t clean the the hub where the rotor sits or check it
for flatness. Didn’t clean or lubricate the mounts where the pads sit.
Didn’t clean the rotor. Used a adjustable pliers to push back calipers,
which is fine, use the old pad to push on so you don’t mess up the pistons
with your pliers. The pad also moves both pistons at the same time so its
easier…. I stopped watching before they got to where they should clean
and lubricate the pins and make sure the calipers slide nice. Did they?

I love road kill and David has been a hero of mine since I could hold a
wrench but this is bullshit.
If your going to show how to do a brake job in a commercial for a auto tech
school do the job right.

At least once a week a customer tells me about how insert the dicks name
here put brakes on their car and now they squeek, stick, pull, pulsate,
wear uneven….. Then they end up paying twice. First for a half ass brake
job, then me for a professional one.

There is a huge difference between doing a brake job and slapping on some
pads and rotors.

Kenshin Himura says:

4 thousandths isn’t bad but I would like to see 3 or less.

Eduardo Perosso says:

FINALLY A GODAMM STANG EPISODE I’VE BEEN ASKING FOR!

THAAAAAANK YOUU David and Mike!

And YES, I wrote on Caps so it looked like I was screaming.

TheSamplebridge says:

Yay hot rod did a mustang. So when are they gonna buy an old foxbody

rtswift says:

so all he really needed to do was get new rubber?

whiteandnerdytuba says:

never thought id actually see my car, with mods from american muscle which
i also use. exhaust is needed for that car next though. she sounds sexy but
way too quiet stock

MEGAHUNTER666 says:

best mustang generation! Now put a coyote engine in it!lol

tom price says:

its nice to see that we still make something useful and high quality here
in england

Toby White says:

So in America rotors are what we Brits call disks?

Tosseef Hussain says:

Great episode! Anybody know the name of the second piece of music?

Sir Mutton Chops says:

That brake dive and squirming look absolutely terrible! If suspension
wasn’t the topic of the next upgrade, I imagine it is now, haha. I like
that you guys understand what budget means and don’t just buy, say, a 180SX
for pennies then throw $40k in top end components at it and act like you
did something special, or a 70s truck and immediately swap an LSA into it.

Jacob Hickman says:

Great episode! Cant wait for the next one and the next Roadkill. These
shows are what keep me into cars when I think about giving up on the field.
I am 21 trying to get my degree in automotive technology and just started
working at a dealership. Just a big Thank you to all of the Motortrend,
Roadkill, And Hot Rod Magazine staff. You guys are helping create the next
generation of car enthusiasts out there!!

ray v says:

This was incredibly help more mustang upgrades please

John Gorgis says:

Autocross mustang ……. Lol .good luck with that live rear axle

braveraxeblade says:

You’re never supposed to compress pistons back into the caliper with
channel locks or vice grips or whatever. The reason they make that special
tool is so you dont mar up the edge of the brake piston while you compress
it. It can lead to problems in the future. I know Freiburger knows what
he’s doing, but that is one thing that I always see people do and have to
say something. Brakes aren’t something you want to take shortcuts on.

Scott Douglas says:

Great episode.Iam I fox body mustang owner.DO A FOX PROJECT.PLEEEASE…Keep
up the good work guys.

Brian Williams says:

So wheres the new host of this show?

doubletapproductions says:

Great Video! Can’t wait to see more of the Stang!

Stryke says:

I suddenly understand why its so dangerous to drive in the US … and
under that cirumstances, I fully understand why they have this speed-limit.

6foot4 butre says:

late models are lame

T1000AX says:

yeah avoid those single hook spring compressors. they slip off and the
strut basically explodes. the ones used here with the twin hooks are much
better.

Tom Slater says:

Guys, really? You don’t clean the caliper bracket or even lube the pad’s
contact surfaces?
C’mon, I know you are on camera but that was a missed opportunity to do
some good “best practices” (or just “how not to suck at wrenching”)
education.

MrSlowestD16 says:

I hate EBC’s coloring scheme, lol. It really doesn’t make any sense at all.

That all aside, I’m really digging this segment. Nice to see things done
on a budget, feel like that’s overlooked a lot in the world due to shows
getting sponsored to hell and what-not.

rtswift says:

sounds like those two had a falling out. i wonder what happened?

Garnica Mark says:

David&Mike, I own 2007 Mustang GT. And I’m planning to put some 6 system
Brembo brake system upgrade kit from Ford Racing. You think it’s worth it?
Or just use that money for something else?

bluejekyl says:

Do you clean the rotors and pads?

Fatasdat says:

most boring hot rod garage ever.. sorry man., show us something cool and
we dont know..

Saying that.. How good is the EBC stuff.. Ive had nothing but Redstuff on
my street car for the last 4 years.. great pads and rotors

Jose Villalon says:

These guys make every car look badass. I used to dislike this generation
mustang, now I want one..,

NoReverse says:

So I have never seen a Lincoln tech college until today I am doing classes
and there being held at a ltc and it is cool
