It has been a long time coming but the R1 is back in the big league.

New from the ground-up and inspired by Yamaha’s 2011 YZR-M1 MotoGP racer, the £14,999 R1 is smaller, lighter, nimbler and more powerful than ever.

It also boasts the most advanced set of electronic riding aids yet seen on a road-going superbike.

Get the best of biking EVERY day…

BeaglePower G says:

In the End, I still think the BMW S1000RR will Spank the rest of the
class..We shall See ??

Liam J says:

The original 98 R1 still looks better.

Mohi Ahmed says:

The double pipe rear exhausts and the look of the old model was jaw
dropping. This… well this just looks okay imo.

Sam H says:

Why do we need a track bike for the road?. The liter bikes are already fast
and you carnt ride them as there where intended on UK roads anyway and why
so many electronics? just more to go wrong and more money the dealers are
gunna charge to put right. I think it will be a great trackbike but I dont
think it will do that well on the road. £14,999 …na i would wait untill
the second hand market gets them. they’ll be down 10k in two years with
about 5k on the clock. +MCN – Motorcyclenews.com When you do your
comparison testing, stick in a 2010 blaze, r1 and zx10 too. Let’s really
see the difference :)

Gixxer-boy says:

All nice and well, but the prices of these new bikes are way too high. The
new r1 is almost 20k € an r1M is almost 25k €. I understand that you get a
lot of a bike for the money, but in my opinion these 1000 cc sportbikes
have gotten too expensive for the avarge person. Great review tho :)

Tony Coyote says:

Looking forward to seeing how it compares/contrasts with the competition.

Chris Carter says:

The black and red models looks million times better. But this machine is
impressive for sure. Another problem for bmw lol. They still trying to
fight Kawasaki 10r off and now Yamaha jumped in. Team Japan forever!

Alex LaJeunesse says:

I knew the new R1 would be a tour de force. There was so much focus on the
Kawasaki H2 and this bike was mostly overlooked if not hated on it for
looks or whatever, it’s shocking. I love the new S1000RR and Panigale 1299,
but right now I’d gladly have the R1, and it’s the cheapest! Good job
Yamaha, now do the new R6 just as well!

MotoBoy says:

whats up with MCN? these are seriously some of the most poor production
quality, most boring videos i’ve ever watched? get on your shit please

Julie Monroe says:

The superbike shootouts should be great this year. So many new and
dramatically updated bikes.

von schwarze natter schwarze natter says:

ride up to the lights shit whats lat a kawasaki h2r now you fill sick

evoermine says:

Interesting to hear your views. You need to look at the camera lense though
rather than the viewfinder screen.

Xavi Spit says:

For me this is a new queen of a superbikes.

Shaun H says:

Sydney Australia?

TheCaptainmojo1973 says:

The new R1 will likely be the bike to have for the next couple of years.
The BMW HP4 is fantastic kit, but the power is brutal and thus makes it
difficult to put down on some of our smaller, tighter tracks here in the US
(I’ve ridden my buddy’s). The HP4 is incredible fun on the roads here. The
power is Biblical. The new R1 will be faster and for sure easier to ride
round most road tracks. We will see soon. Several of my buddies arr getting
them, including the M version. Going to make my Honda seem outdated
perhaps. Party!

XenonOzHID says:

Great review, and like many of your fans I wish I’d known you were in here
in Australia, so we could provide you with some hospitality.

Steffen Makowski says:

APRILIA RSV4 IS KING

Mohamed Shahrim says:

#yamaha

Authentic Max says:

Nowadays I’ve noticed bikers using carbon fiber wheels. Are they good ?
Like in what sense ? Just good because of the weight reduction ? And how
strong are they ? Does anyone have experience with carbon fiber wheels ?

CycleCruza says:

This new R1 looks sicker the more I see it.

Ride With Rahul says:

I really really Want to ride this bike on track!

Ninad Ganore says:

that old yellow r1 still looks better than this ….and I would chose that
or a current fireblade over this any day.

Jordan Hardwick says:

So old R1 (98) for example can be used for everyday amd tracks but the new
2015 model is purely focused for track hmm ….

UBCS Wraith says:

Yamaha REALLY stepped their game up. It’s clear they’re trying to leave
their Japanese counterparts behind to compete with the big European
manufacturers. Good on them! I do miss the old R1’s looks. The R1 was my
favorite looking motorcycle of all time. This looks very European.

Cruz Allen says:

Ok awesome the supersports are better than ever! Now when is a version of
this as a sport touring gunna be available for those who like their
insurance to cost less than the payments of the bike itself.

Ayush Sharma says:

Now all we need is a 5-way shootout between the new S1000RR, RSV4 RF, R1M,
1299 Panigale S and H2.

This is a really good year for the superbike category.

Vishnu das says:

the new r1 looks like the bottom part of it is designed by honda guys ..and
top from yamaha itself

snakethebrain85 says:

HAVE EVERYBODY HERE FORGOTTEN WHY WE RIDE?

Who needs all the electric on a supersport bike? Why giving the control out
of your own hands to a computer? So you can better play a videogame and do
the driver/rider-settings on AMATEUR and have some fun;-) I wonder why
BMW, Yamaha, Kawasaki and co didn’t install a racingline-headup-display and
brake-point indicator too on their windscreens, im sure it is in
development by the manufacturers 😉 Than you can give your 10years old son
your bike and let him out for a turn on Nordschleife, maybe he set a new
lap-record time in his 2. lap :-))
The only meaningful develope (in my opinion) was the ABS for bikes on a
open road,
It has many accidents prevented which will happen cause brake by a sudden
or abrupt friction losses are done!

ALL OTHER PROBLEMS CAUSED THE RIDER ITSELFS!!!

So when you will run before you can walk, than you need all this electric,
if you have the patience/ ability to learn and maybe accept the risk to
fall down by moving to your own limits (which is the right way i think,)
than better start with an older bike without all these electric helpers.
BTW: i start “walking” on a Yamaha XJ600N(61hp), than try walking faster on
a
1998 Fireblade (131hp) and later going to run on a 2007 Fireblade (171hp).
Actually i ride a 2009 Fireblade ABS (178hp) and powercommander (169whp on
dyno)
I have to say that i also tried the 2009 and 2012 BMWS1000RR (both in sport
mode and all electrics ON), in knowing of my/physical limits, and i have to
say it was a kind of boring to me. I didnt mean the powerful motor (awesome
engeniering ;-), i speak about the electric which ride the bike, i was
feeling like a passenger in a taxi while say to the driver where i want to
go, sure he will find the my destination 🙁

My phase of learning was not ever painless, but i’m happy to going this
way!!!
I can say from me that i totally know where my own, and also the physical
limits are.
When riding a bike which controls you (especially when never ridden
superbikes without electrics), how you will know about any limit out there?

So enjoy your bikes with things like traction control,,wheelie control,
stoppie control, slide control, dynamic damping control, quickshifter, now
also a quick-downshifter out there (LOL).

I am not opposed to technical progress, but would continue to prefer to
drive motorcycle by my own!!!

Nathan Middleton says:

I’m just stoked this was done in Australia at SMP. Was watching the first
few seconds of the video thinking “Looks a bit like SMP….looks a lot like
SMP….Holy shit, it is SMP!”

Darrell N says:

There seems to be no end in technology And PRICE going up !
Great review.

jerichom11x says:

meh, tough to say but even the bmw front end looks better than this

LordAugastus says:

Who are these people who say sport bikes are dead???

In light of petrol prices the bike sales have been going up every year.
Aint no motorcycle death here.

I am Iron Man says:

I need to change my pants!

Eloy Cruz says:

Wow. I would love to have one! They’re so beautiful, and much more lighter
☺️

excessiveforce03 says:

If you’re not using this bike for the race track, how does it perform in
the real world? Can it live 50/50, track/street.

The Stig says:

Just a question, they took off the mirrors for the track test or am I
seeing that wrong?

Edd Nichols says:

much better video than normal, nice one :)

Vincent Vega says:

Still I would buy fireblade. Why? Because its light weight bike, great
handling, no electronic gadgets , no engine modes ,its very consistent bike
– rider is most important on that bike. For me way the honda goes is great.
Fireblade its not so powerfull as competition but thats why you dont need 6
gyro & all this electonic stuff. Thats all make CBR great ROAD superbike.
Probably if I was track rider than R1 would be my choice.

Just for the record – I had R1 2009 and decided to sell it because all
those things above.

Ajay Jose says:

It’s time Honda comes out with a whole new Blade and Suzuki with a new
gixxer.

Shaquille S says:

I think the older one’s look better

Blade Chob says:

Well, despite all the other neg comments, I love it! I’ve owned 2008, 2011
and 2014 R1s. All have been excellent and looked the biz. The new R1 is the
best yet. Yeah it’s a lot of dosh but it’s a lot of bike. I’ll be getting
one as soon as I can convince the missus to do extra shifts on the street.

MCN - Motorcyclenews.com says:
DeadHead says:

Everyone knows how easy the S1000RR is to live with on a daily basis from
riding with your mates to the odd track day. I do think the R1 will turn
out to be the top track bike, I don’t think it will be so easy to live with
if you listen to some of the comments he makes in the video. Can’t wait to
find out what the verdict is.

solidsnake2164 says:

Kawasaki H2/H2R vs Yamaha R1M

CruStiii says:

beautiful bike, only downside to it for me are the lights, the front end,
but like in the vid its a track bike so its doen’t bother, so keep it going
yamaha

Will Brum says:

keep indulging yourselves yawn

ZeroBoostBuick says:

How many of you people commentating on this video actually ride
sportbikes/superbikes on the race track ??? The rider is the biggest
variable on the track, and not the bike. Assuming we’re all riding
sportbikes on track tires.

Paul Higgins says:

By far the best review so far Neevesy. If you read all the other reviews
they are full of hype as if the systems on the current class leaders don’t
exist or haven’t developed. It’s great to see Yamaha back in the game as
more choice can only be good (if somewhat agonising)!

Mozart says:

no. please no.

Simon McDonagh says:

Im on my second R1 and the Crossplane engine is just such a delight to
ride, if you haven’t ridden one your missing out. Great to see Yamaha
producing class leading cutting edge bikes with individuality and
character. We R1
